The river was looking beautiful on Monday, 12/13, as this photo taken at Deer Gulch shows.
There were no fishermen to be seen, but this less-than-hardy fisherperson was unable to stand the biting wind for very long. Steelhead have been caught here this fall, and will be caught here throughout the winter. Just look for temperatures staying above the teens at night in order to have slush free water. This weekend conditions should be excellent as daytime temperatures are forecast to be in the upper 30’s. Slow drifted steelhead nymphs such as a Hotbutt Stone work great in the winter.
Letting a spoon roll over the bottom, or drifting a nightcrawler/corky or Powerbait worm/corky combo are also good winter techniques.
