The Salmon River is a little below normal for this time of year but the clarity has been great. The river has been clear with just a little staining below the Lemhi confluence in Salmon. Nighttime temperatures have been below freezing around Challis, slowing any run-off from the warmer temperatures during the day. The water is warming up to the higher 30’s around Challis and into the lower to mid 40’s around Salmon. All of the ramps around Challis are open except for the BLM ramp at the Challis Bridge south of town. It has a big ice shelf you have to drop your boat off that is about seven feet high. All ramps around Salmon are clear also. Fishing has picked up and steelhead have been caught using both flies and and spoons. Try darker flies like the Green Butt Skunk,General Practitioner, Hot Butt Stone, Bunny Bugs or a Chrome Candy.
